ABSTRACTIONISM. A journey through time is the title of the catalog for the eponymous exhibition (April 5 – September 7, 2025), which pays tribute to an artistically significant movement, as well as an expression of commitment to contemporary culture and art that led to the founding of Fondazione Cambiano. The works by the exhibited artists reflect the richness and variety of Abstract Art, with a particular focus on Classical Abstractionism, while Andy Warhol’s visual provocation still invites reflection on the consumption dynamics of contemporary society.
The essay by Nicola Nuti, the curator of the exhibition, provides an overview of the artistic contributions from Tuscany and Italy in the decades following the Second World War, from abstract movements— which reinvented non-figurative language through the different backgrounds of each artist— to Pop Art, “closer to American post-pictorial abstraction… than to contemporary realism” (L. Lippard, Pop Art). The works by Berti, Brunetti, Corpora, Crippa, Monnini, Montanarini, Moretti, Nuti, Rho, Scanavino, and Tognetti are gathered in two sections of the catalog: “Paintings” and “Ceramic Works.”
With this exhibition, CAMBIO Centro Culturale di Castelfiorentino opens a dialogue between temporary exhibitions and works from its permanent collection, which already hosts artists like Venturino Venturi and Gualtiero Nativi.
Nicola Nuti, born in Florence in 1960, is a journalist, consultant, and art critic. Son of Mario Nuti, a key figure in Florentine Classical Abstraction, he began his career in the 1980s, writing for La Città and curating texts for art catalogs. He has curated numerous exhibitions in public and private spaces, both in Italy and abroad, and has contributed to newspapers and magazines including Il Giornale, L’Indipendente, La Nazione, La Città, The European Magazine, Eco d’arte moderna, and many specialized journals. He has written numerous studies, in-depth analyses, and monographs dedicated to Classical Abstraction and the artists who founded it.
