“Without having planned it that way, this book is the fourth time that we are probing an area of design that involves the design of a mutual relationship between people rather than just designing “things”. In other words, it focuses on that combination between personalities, knowledge, common intentions, alternative visions and indispensable divergence that is far from easy to delineate. As we did for the first three books, the first thing we have to tell about Marta Laudani and Marco Romanelli is about relationships within a profession that can never be fully defined.
This is the ability to grapple at first with the addition of different entities in a never-predictable human and professional relationship. […] The value of their multifaceted careers requires assessment of how it has changed over time and overcome personal changes and the contradictions that are always part of work done in a pair regarding who does what, how and when.
We can get past this narrow point of view by noting how their respective personalities have given a uniqueness to their work, likely in part because it came out of an uncommon professional practice that has been carried out between Milan and Rome for over 25 years.[…]”

Since 1988 MARTA LAUDANI and MARCO ROMANELLI, architects, have worked in studios in Rome and Milan. They have designed for Arflex, Azzurra, Bosa, Dorelan, Driade, Fiam, Fontana Arte, Glas, Nodus, O luce, Salviati, Valsecchi 1918 and Up&Up. Their design work has been published in leading international journals. It has always been accompanied by an ongoing exploration of theory, which Marta Laudani has pursued by teaching at the Faculty of Architecture at La Sapienza University of Rome, and Marco Romanelli has pursued as an editor for Domus (1986-1994) and Abitare (1995-2007). In 2010 the Milan Triennale dedicated a solo exhibition to them; in 2011 they won the Compasso d’Oro for a design project with Sardinian artisans.
