The volume, the first in the chain Opere Contemporanee, illustrates the project realized by Archea Associati for the renovation and expansion of the former Military Hospital on the island of La Maddalena island which has been transformed into a resort complex which was originally intended to host the great world leaders for the G8 summit. The fact that the latter was moved to l’Aquila, after the earthquake which struck the people and territories of Abruzzo on 6 April, does not make any of the problems associated with this architecture any easier to solve; in fact, the project must contemplate, in one and a same context, the renovation of old buildings, the construction of large new volumes, the creation of a park, the harmonizing and merging of the structures with a particularly valuable and delicate environmental context. The works have moreover witnessed an extraordinary construction capacity which has made it possible for the workers of the Gia.Fi company, divided in three watches working 24 hours a day, to execute and complete the project in as little as 313 days as of the consignment of the building site. The book is therefore a tangible testimonial of an architectural thought, technical skills and an ability to build which will remain the cornerstones of this new publishing initiative.
