Sander Coers’ Bittersweet, the third exhibition in the exhibition cycle The Body I Live In, curated by Irene Alison and Paolo Cagnacci, brings to Rifugio Digitale the saturated colours and warm tones of the Dutch photographer and his exploration of the uncertain body of teenage boys. Drawing inspiration from the photographer’s personal recollections, Bittersweet delves into the emotional landscape of adolescent men and presents a cast of characters – mostly composed of the artist’s friends and family members – who face the transformative journey to adulthood. Somewhere between memoir and dream, Bittersweet is a visual essay that delves into the complexity of the male landscape, exploring themes of love, intimacy and personal growth with a sensual and empathetic gaze. Its young protagonists, each grappling with the yearnings of adolescence, are at the centre of an investigation that questions the complex notion of being a man in a society that rejects traditional models of masculinity but struggles to identify new ones.
